The Spokane Preservation Advocates, a local group dedicated to preserving Spokane’s historic buildings, has selected City Council Member Lori Kinnear, District Two, as the recipient of its 2018 Advocacy Award, in large part because of an ordinance she championed earlier this year to protect historic structures.

“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Council Member Kinnear. “The historic preservation ordinance represents one of my largest legislative achievements as a member of the City Council. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my team of dedicated City staff, a variety of engaged community stakeholders, and members of the Spokane Preservation Advocates.”

One of multiple awards given by the SPA each year, the Advocacy Award honors an individual who has demonstrated dedication and perseverance in advocating for historic preservation in Spokane. Members of the SPA Board cited Council Member Kinnear’s extensive work on her comprehensive historic preservation ordinance as the reason for their choice.

The ordinance enhanced protections for historic buildings, created new incentives for developers to retain historic buildings, instead of demolishing them, and created a process for designating entire historic districts on the local Spokane Registry of Historic Places. The ordinance was adopted in February.

Council Member Kinnear will receive the award during the SPA’s Fifth Annual Historic Preservation Awards ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Montvale Events Center.
